To Take or not to Take.

A tradition prevails when people gather to share a meal or make purchases in each other's company, whether they are family members, friends, or colleagues. Rooted in the values of camaraderie and mutual care, this tradition involves an offer to cover the expenses for others. It's a way of demonstrating respect, appreciation, and the strong sense of community that Punjabi culture embraces.

As the bill arrives at the end of a meal, a contest often ensues among the diners to assume responsibility for paying. This friendly competition isn't about proving one's financial prowess; instead, it's a symbolic gesture of the bond shared among the individuals present. People may even try to secretly approach the counter to settle the bill, smiling on their way back, having successfully taken care of it.

Similarly, during reunions, another layer of this tradition unfolds. It's common for someone to offer money to the host's family before departing. This gesture holds a lot of significance, demonstrating not only financial generosity but also the enduring connection that time and distance cannot weaken. Amidst the friendly bickering over who should accept the money, an unspoken understanding exists—a testament to the goodwill shared among loved ones.

The tradition extends to multi-generational gatherings as well. Grandparents, for instance, often leave behind a little sum of money for their grandchildren—a small token of affection. The kids are often caught in limbo: be respectful and take the money or not take the money when they see their parents glaring at them. This can also happen well into adulthood and although it makes for momentary awkwardness for kids, this act of kindness further solidifies the tradition's essence: it's not about the amount being given, but the intention behind it.

In essence, this tradition underscores the values of humility, unity, and selflessness where gestures of giving go beyond materialistic worth, serving as a means of reaffirming bonds, expressing gratitude, and celebrating the simple joy of being together.

Sometimes the assumption that the other person will pay for a meal, in rare cases, might lead to having to wash dishes.
